How to Make a $10 Sushi Dinner at Home With Walmart Ingredients

Think sushi night has to mean pricey takeout or specialty ingredients? Think again. This week, we challenged ourselves to feed the whole family for $10 using only items from Walmart — and the results were surprisingly delicious (and fun). Here’s how we pulled it off, what worked, what didn’t, and how you can do it even better at home.

1. The $10 Grocery List.

We kept it simple, fresh, and budget-friendly. Here’s what went into our cart:

  • 1 cucumber – $0.50

  • 2 avocados – $0.77 each ($1.54 total)

  • Real crab meat (imitation works too) – $2.92

  • Fried onion crisps – $2.68

  • Rice – already had some at home (Cali Rose brand, perfect for sushi texture)
    Total: $7.64

We decided to splurge a little and add frozen tempura shrimp ($5). That brought the total to about $12.64, but if you skip the shrimp, you’ll land right around $10.

2. Making the Sushi Rice Base.

Start by cooking your rice — Cali Rose short-grain rice works best for this recipe because it gets sticky enough to mold. Once cooked, press the rice firmly into a flat dish or baking pan.

After it cools slightly, cut the rice into “bricks” or rectangular pieces. We tried pan-frying them in a little oil to create crispy rice bases, but fair warning — the fried version wasn’t a family favorite. The texture was too crunchy. Instead, skip the frying and keep the rice soft for a better bite.

3. Prepping the Fillings.

While your rice cools, prep your toppings:

  • Peel and slice the cucumber into thin sticks.

  • Slice the avocado.

  • Mix the crab with mayonnaise, soy sauce, Sriracha, and sesame oil for flavor.

If you’re using shrimp, air fry them until crispy. These make a great topping option for a “shrimp tempura roll” twist.

4. Building the Sushi Bricks (or Bowls).

Lay out your rice base, then top with cucumber, avocado, and your crab mixture. If you made shrimp, add those on top. Finish with a drizzle of spicy mayo or teriyaki sauce and sprinkle with crispy onions.

If the crispy rice doesn’t appeal to you, just build it as a deconstructed sushi bowl instead — same ingredients, less mess. The flavors are incredible and it’s easier for kids to assemble their own portions.

5. Taste Test and Takeaways.

We loved the freshness of the crab and avocado combination. The spicy mayo and onion crisps added restaurant-quality flavor for just a few extra cents. The fried rice, on the other hand, wasn’t worth the extra step — it’s better soft.

With a little soy sauce on the side and some chopsticks for fun, this budget sushi night felt like a treat.

6. Tips for Viewers.

  • Use leftovers: This recipe works with any protein — tuna, canned salmon, or tofu.

  • Stretch it further: Serve with miso soup packets or edamame to round out the meal.

  • Make it fun for kids: Let them build their own “sushi bowls” with toppings of their choice.

  • Upgrade for $5 more: Add tempura shrimp or imitation crab mix for a second style of roll.

7. Final Thoughts.

Not every kitchen experiment is perfect — our fried rice version didn’t win anyone over — but the base recipe was a hit. For around $10, you can create a fun, fresh, and healthy sushi-inspired dinner that feeds the family and sparks creativity in the kitchen.

Next time you’re at Walmart, grab a cucumber, avocado, and a pack of crab — and you’re halfway to a sushi night that’s easy on the wallet and big on flavor.
